LSNA Restoration & Bird-Banding Tour

Help us kick off the summer season with a tour of the Luckiamute State Natural Area (LSNA) restoration project! LWC Restoration Project Director Aubrey Siddiqui-Cloud will provide an in-depth look at the progress being made within LSNA's North Tract thanks to over a decade of restoration work by the LWC and its partners — including a close-up view of the native trees and shrubs now in their fourth year of growth within the 60-acre "Phase 5" planting area. This former agricultural lease land is now well on its way to becoming part of the largest contiguous floodplain forest habitat remaining in the Willamette Valley — an extraordinary milestone for regional conservation!
Tour participants will also get a "behind-the-scenes" look at a bird-banding research station sponsored by the US Geological Survey (USGS). Joan Hagar and Josée Rousseau will describe their research on habitat use and bird survival at LSNA and give us a close-up view of some of the local birdlife! |

Note that this event will involve walking approximately 2 miles along a relatively flat walking path, as well as through some off-trail areas that may have bumpy, uneven terrain. Please make sure to dress for the weather, wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes, and bring your water bottle. You are also invited to bring a bag lunch and a lawn chair for an optional picnic lunch after the tour.
About the Event Leaders:
Aubrey Siddiqui-Cloud started working to restore the Willamette Valley’s native habitats in 2016, when he was hired as a restoration contractor for a local reforestation crew. Then, in 2020, he transitioned to a new role as a Restoration Project Director for the Luckiamute Watershed Council and a Project Manager for the Marys River Watershed Council, where he continues to improve riparian and floodplain forest habitat within a wide range of sites throughout the Willamette Valley.
Joan Hagar is a Research Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center in Corvallis, where her work focuses on forest ecology, biodiversity conservation, and riparian songbird responses to habitat restoration. She earned her Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from Oregon State University and continues to serve there as an affiliate faculty member. She co-leads a long-term bird monitoring program at Luckiamute State Natural Area with Josée Rousseau.
Josée Rousseau is an avian ecologist with the Sierra Nevada team at Point Blue Conservation Science who specializes in spatial ecology, biodiversity, and the impacts of land management on bird conservation. After earning her PhD from Oregon State University and completing postdoctoral research at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, she now balances her large-scale habitat research with co-leading a long-term bird monitoring program at Luckiamute State Natural Area with Joan Hagar.
